For the first time in over two months in the Uganda Premier League (UPL), BUL FC walked off the pitch with something tangible to show for their efforts, grinding out a narrow victory over struggling Calvary FC on Wednesday.
The result, achieved at Midigo Primary School Playground, marked the official start of Alex Isabirye Musongola’s return to the dugout, with the seasoned coach overseeing a disciplined performance that finally arrested the club’s worrying decline.
A moment of experience proved decisive early in the contest. Karim Ndugwa, one of the most seasoned figures in BUL’s squad, struck in the 10th minute, a goal that ultimately separated the two sides in a match short on clear chances.
BUL had arrived at the fixture under heavy pressure after enduring an eight-game winless streak, a run that included five consecutive defeats and forced changes within the technical set-up. Abbey Kikomeko Bogere paid the price, paving the way for Isabirye’s return.
The move had long appeared inevitable. Isabirye, who parted ways with URA FC at the beginning of December, had already been closely associated with the club’s direction, even watching BUL’s loss to KCCA FC alongside chairman Ronald Barente while still unattached.
His history with the Eastern Giants made the decision a familiar one. Isabirye remains the most successful coach in the club’s modern era, having delivered the Uganda Cup title in 2022, a benchmark the club has been eager to revisit.
Wednesday’s win nudges BUL up to eighth on the league standings with 13 points, offering a platform to rebuild momentum. At the other end of the table, Calvary FC remain anchored at the bottom, their tally stuck at three points as the season’s challenges deepen.
