In a thrilling StarTimes Uganda Premier League (UPL) showdown on Wednesday, Lugazi FC secured their second consecutive victory by defeating NEC FC 1-0 at Najjembe, marking a successful debut for their new coach, Steven Bogere.
The game saw Sam Ssemugugu step up as the hero, capitalizing on a misplayed clearance by NEC captain Ibrahim Kiyemba in the 70th minute. Ssemugugu’s quick interception led to a breakaway, allowing him to finish past NEC’s goalkeeper, Hannington Sebwalunyo, from close range.
The win builds on Lugazi’s previous triumph over Express, achieved under interim coach Oliver Mbekeka, the first woman to lead a top-flight Ugandan team.
Wednesday’s victory, Lugazi’s first on home turf, elevates them to 11th place with eight points from seven matches, just behind Express on goal difference.
NEC, missing the chance to reclaim the top spot, stays in second with 15 points, one behind league leaders Vipers SC.
Meanwhile, Police FC redeemed themselves after a recent loss to Vipers with a 2-1 comeback victory against Mbale Heroes at Kavumba.
Ben Ochen’s early strike in the 23rd minute put Police ahead, only for Mbale Heroes to equalize early in the second half through Umar Kyebatala.
However, Isaac Ogwang sealed the win for Police with a decisive goal just five minutes from the final whistle.
With this result, Police moves to fourth in the standings with ten points, while Mbale Heroes remain near the bottom of the table with just four points from seven games.
