The Uganda Premier League enters a critical phase this week as relegation-threatened Soltilo Bright Stars and Wakiso Giants square off in a high-stakes Kavumba derby, while Kitara hosts Lugazi in a clash with top-four implications.
At Kavumba Recreation Grounds, 15th-placed Soltilo Bright Stars (15 points) welcome 14th-placed Wakiso Giants (18 points) in a match that could significantly impact both teams’ survival hopes. A win for the hosts under coach Steven Bengo would move them to within two points of safety, increasing pressure on 13th-placed Mbarara City, who play SC Villa on Wednesday.
On the other hand, a loss for Ian Mutenda’s Wakiso Giants—nicknamed the Purple Sharks—could all but seal their relegation fate after a decade in the top flight. The two teams settled for a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture played at Kabaka Kyabaggu.
Meanwhile, at Royal Park in Butema, fifth-placed Kitara FC will look to bounce back from their recent 2-1 loss to NEC as they host Lugazi FC. With 35 points and just four behind fourth-placed URA, Wasswa Bbosa’s men are targeting a swift return to winning ways to stay in contention for continental football.
Lugazi, who sit in 11th with 27 points, are winless in their last three games and desperate for a turnaround to steer clear of the drop zone.
