In Uganda, there are very few sports governing bodies or leagues that organize annual awards sessions to recognize the best of the best after a year of hard work.
Well, the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) has joined the list of very few sports governing bodies who organize annual awards. This week, they revealed plans for the inaugural USSSA Excellence Awards, slated to take place on December 15, 2023, at the prestigious Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala. The Awards were officially launched by USSSA President Justus Mugisha during the USSSA-USPA Media Engagement held at Kati Kati Restaurant, Kampala.
According to USSSA, the event is set to mark a significant stride in recognizing and celebrating outstanding achievements in secondary school sports across Uganda with exceptional performances at national and international school sports competitions set to be rewarded.
The Chairman organizing committee of the local organizing committee of the awards, Hajji Twahil Kiteezala noted that athletes, coaches and schools have been working hard in the recent past and the awards have come at a right time.
“We intend to inspire the achievers. We also intend to strengthen the USSSA brand through the awards. Even if the awards are done in Goldy purpose, it reminds us that there will only be one winner…so only the winner (s) will take home the award (s),” Hajji Twahil Kiteezala said.
The awards include; Coach of the year, sports teacher of the year, school of the year (boys and girls) – number of medals won over the year, Team of the year – MVPS for boys and girls, Fair-play award (Most disciplined team on and off the pitch), special recognition awards as well as primary schools (football, netball and volleyball).
Journalists, sports teachers, team captains, coaches of all schools who participated in national championship and zones will participate in the initial voting process. Thereafter, there will be an overall technical team that will look at outcome from all the above.
Why the USSSA Excellence Awards are a good thing
Awards in sports are not just pieces of metal or trophies that athletes receive for their outstanding performance. They represent the culmination of months, if not years, of hard work, dedication and passion towards their craft. Awards not only recognize the best performers in their respective fields but also highlight their accomplishments, inspire others to reach similar levels of success, and create a sense of pride among fans and supporters.
Awards motivate athletes to push themselves beyond their limits, to strive for excellence, and to achieve their goals. They provide the necessary recognition and encouragement that helps athletes stay focused and driven towards their objectives. Winning an award brings immense satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment to the player and his or her team and also helps boost their morale and confidence.
Additionally, awards provide a platform for players to showcase their talent to a wider audience, making them stand out from the rest and attracting potential sponsors and endorsements. These awards can also lead to other opportunities like scholarships, enhanced visibility and fame, or a chance to play at higher levels of competition, thus opening up new avenues for their career.
Finally, awards also play a significant role in inspiring the younger generation of athletes. Children who see their heroes celebrated and recognized for their achievements, naturally aspire to follow in their footsteps and work towards similar goals. This leads to an increased interest in sports, healthier lifestyles and a positive attitude towards achieving success.
In conclusion, sports awards not only recognize the best and brightest in the sports world but are also an essential motivator for athletes to achieve success, inspire the next generation, and provide opportunities for career progression. They represent the culmination of hard work and dedication towards a cause, and serve as a testament to what can be accomplished when one puts their heart and soul into something they are passionate about.
