Wananchi Sports Club women’s Captain Teopista Anyango has hailed her teammates for helping the side win the 2021 domestic treble following the conclusion of the local hockey season on Saturday at the National Hockey Stadium in Lugogo, Kampala.
A 2-1 win over Deliverance Church Hockey Club in the inaugural Uganda Cup final meant that Wananchi completed a treble victory having won the Independence Cup and retaining the Uganda Baati Women’s National League title earlier on.
After sweeping all the accolades at their disposal, Anyango delights in the successful season but has heaped praise on her teammates for doing a great job amidst tough conditions.
“It has been a very tough season because of the Covid-19 situation that has affected sports a lot. However, we managed to withstand all the challenges and win the Uganda Cup on top of the Independence Cup and the league. All these has been possible because of the hard work of everyone on the team, I congratulate everyone on this team and I’m proud of you,” Anyango said after the Uganda Cup victory on Saturday.
In the Saturday Cup final, Doreen Asiimwe gave Wananchi an early lead when she slotted home in the 8th minute.
There was little to talk about in the second and third quarter not until the final quarter when Judith Toopacha evened matters with 10 minutes to play. However, Jolly Alimo reinstated Wananchi’s lead five minutes later and they held on to win it 2-1.
“It was a very tough game but we thank God we came out victorious. Personally I’m happy for winning the Uganda Cup and I can’t wait for what’s ahead,” Anyango added.
Anyango, just like most of the players has now shifted her focus to the national team with the Ugandan sides (both men and women) now preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations (ACN) slated for January 2022 in Accra, Ghana.
