Over the years, NCS (National Council of Sports) and UOC (Uganda Olympic Committee) have been engaged in wrangles, directly or indirectly and in the end sports associations/ federations were the ones suffering.
In most cases, the two bodies would engage themselves in proxy wars within or between associations/federations, and in the end the local sports governing bodies would suffer major setbacks.
However, new NCS Chairman Donald Rukare, also UOC General Secretary has come out to say that the two bodies have buried their hatchet, a good thing for sport.
“The wars between NCS and UOC are long gone,” Rukare admitted adding that even before he was appointed NCS Chairman, the two bodies had buried hatchet.
Rukare also added that initiating members of the UOC to the NCS has created a healthy co-existance between the two bodies.
“In many African countries like Ghana, Lesotho, Botswana, South Africa and others, members of the National Olympic Council (NOC) are also members of the National Council of Sports. It is one way of minimizing unnecessary territorial conflicts since matters can be resolved easily,” Rukare added.
Rukare, also former USF (Uganda Swimming Federation) President has urged federations to refuse to be used by the two bodies for selfish reasons.
“Issues must be resolved within the family of each sporting federation and there should be mechanisms to resolve conflicts,” Rukare said.
“We do not want to interfere in the affairs of running of a federation. However, it is important for federations to have good governance,” Rukare added.
Federations like Taekwondo and Table Tennis have suffered the effects of NCS – UOC proxy wars whereby at one time both bodies had two presidents, each recognized by either NCS or UOC.
