Jackson Were has been re-elected President of the Uganda Golf Union (UGU) and will serve his final term in office after emerging victorious at a well-attended Elective Annual General Meeting held at Entebbe Sports Club.
Were garnered 16 votes, finishing five ahead of committee member Joseph Okudi, while outgoing Vice President Anthony Agaba managed two votes in a closely watched contest. His victory signals continuity at the helm of Ugandan golf as the Union prepares for a busy competitive calendar.
Shortly after being declared winner, Were expressed gratitude to members for renewing their trust in his leadership and called for unity within the fraternity.
“The process of elections will always produce a winner and a loser, but for the sake of the game, it is imperative that we work together,” Were said. “We shall work with everyone willing to transform the game.”
A former captain of Mbarara Golf Club, Were previously served as Vice President under former UGU President Moses Matsiko before taking over the top seat in January 2024. During his tenure, he has been credited for backing junior golf development, notably endorsing the team that went on to win the Victoria Cup at Kipipiri Golf Resort against the odds. His administration has also been praised for prudent utilisation of resources, particularly in supporting upcountry golf clubs.
