The West Nile Open Golf Tournament that was slated for 10-12 June 2021 at west Nile Club in Arua City has been postponed to a later date.

Initially, the tournament was meant to take place on 29th May but was postponed and later expanded to make way for Round One of the Singleton Match Play Challenge held monthly at Entebbe Club’s par-71 golf course.

According to the club missive seen by this reporter, the recent decision has been made basing on the current Covid-19 situation in the country that has seen a sharp increase in positive cases.

“The management of west Nile Club would like to announce that the tournament that was meant to take place from 10th-12th June 2021 at West Nile Club has been postponed due to the Coronavirus situation in the country. A new date will be communicated soon, we regret all the postponement,” a club statement read.

The West Nile Open was meant to host both a professional and amateur players with the paid rank of players set to play in the first two days while amateurs were to play in the main event (Saturday) that would also double as an award ceremony (19th hole experience).

Local golf competitions around the Kampala courses, plus Entebbe will possibly continue but those upcountry may have to be halted due to the current ban on intra-district travel both using public and private means for about six weeks as a Covid-19 preventive measure.

In his address to the nation on Sunday on the way forward to curb the sharp rising positive cases of covid-19, President Yoweri Museveni revealed that sports activities will continue but without fans.

“Sports events will continue with strict observance of SOPs without spectators,” President Museveni said in his televised address to the nation on the same.

Sports activities were reinstated in September last year after about a six-month haitus due to Covid-19 disruptions and golfers teed-off first.
