The Uganda Women in Rugby were engaged in a breast cancer awareness workshop on Thursday afternoon at Kyadondo Rugby Club, an event that capped the disease’s awareness month (October) which is observed globally.

According to Regina Lunyolo who is the Women’s Representative at the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) Executive Committee, the event that was attended by players, coaches, officials and the like was meant to create awareness about breast cancer among women in rugby and beyond.

“Breast cancer is a big issue and we need to address it with seriousness. People need to be sensitized on how to prevent, detect (self-examine), risk factors and also be notified on the dangers of the disease including its treatment,” Lunyolo said.

Dr. Steven Buyongo, a Uganda Rugby medical doctor facilitated most parts of the workshop that was attended by about 30 women and a few men. He also conducted a screening exercise at the end of proceedings.

The workshop is the first ever to be held by Women’s Rugby in observance of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This was an initiative of the ladies section of the URU, URU medical society and it was championed by ‘Unstoppables’ from Uganda and other Women’s Rugby ambassadors at different levels.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities and individuals every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.
