The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has postponed the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers.
According to the CAF Emergency Committee, the move comes after considerations of the current challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
This was revealed on Thursday, May 06 through a press statement released by the CAF Communications department.
“The CAF Emergency Committee, in consultation with FIFA, decided to postpone the CAF Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 that were to be played in June 2021 after taking into consideration the current challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to ensure the optimal playing conditions for all participating teams.” Read part of the statement.
As a consequence, the qualifiers have been moved to the September, October and November FIFA Windows.
It is also understood that CAF is reassessing its protocols and processes to enhance the implementation of COVID-19 related protocols which had become a problem in the past AFCON qualification.
The news comes as music to Uganda and several other nations that were struggling to find venues for their home fixtures.
Uganda was contemplating on whether to host its games at Kitende or in Tanzania after Mandela National Stadium was deemed unfit to host World Cup qualification games.
