Garvin Ashworth, one of the only three Grade A World Athletics route measurers in Africa, is spearheading the measurement and assessment of the route for the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon in Kasese. The main aim of this exercise is to certify the marathon course to the highest international standards, ensuring it’s recognition by World Athletics.
Ashworth, 66, known for his thoroughness in measuring and evaluating routes, brings years of expertise to the table. With accreditation from World Athletics, his role is crucial in ensuring the precision and fairness of the marathon course.
The certification process that started on 23rd March 2024, involves accurately measuring the marathon route, evaluating its layout, elevation changes, and other factors affecting the race. Ashworth meticulously surveys each kilometer, utilizing cutting-edge technology and methodologies endorsed by World Athletics.
Upon completion and verification by World Athletics, the Rwenzori Marathon route will join a select group of certified courses globally. This accreditation boosts the event’s prestige and offers opportunities for elite athletes to qualify and set records on a globally recognized course.
“Once I complete all measurements and documentation, I’ll submit everything to World Athletics for route certification,” Ashworth explained. He emphasized that certifying the route ensures athletes receive accurate timing for the distance they’ve covered.

Ashworth, who boasts experience measuring routes in various iconic locations like Kilimanjaro and Victoria Falls, highlights the unique allure of the Mt Rwenzori Marathon route. He emphasizes its distinctiveness and attractiveness compared to others he has assessed.
“Every route has its own beauty and unique characteristics, but this particular one stands out for its undeniable attractiveness. It’s truly beautiful and stunning—I dare say, one of the finest in all of Africa,” Ashworth conceded.
The Mt. Rwenzori Marathon is the first one to be measured and assessed by an official from World Athletics, something that has excited Amos Wekesa, leader of the Rwenzori Marathon team.
“This is a very exciting time for Uganda,” Wekesa said, adding, “This gives the Mt. Rwenzori Marathon an opportunity to be featured on the World Athletics website as one of the marathons with a certified route. This brings numerous advantages, as some elite runners choose not to participate in marathons without certified routes.”

“I want to assure Ugandans that we will see some major influencers from organizations like Adidas and Nike attending the Rwenzori Marathon on August 24th. If you haven’t registered yet, you’re going to miss out. Additionally, Kasese has experienced a transformation, partly due to the Mt. Rwenzori Marathon. Now, everyone plans their activities around this event.”
Julius Nkuraija, the Course Director of the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon, praised Garvin Ashworth’s role in measuring the marathon route. Nkuraija stressed Ashworth’s expertise in maintaining international standards, ensuring a fair and precise experience for all participants. He believes Ashworth’s involvement will elevate the marathon’s reputation worldwide.

“Additionally, we’ve made some exciting changes to the route this year. The 42km race will now start at the Equator, making it the only marathon to do so. In addition to the existing 5km and 21km races, we’ve introduced a 10km race to accommodate those who want to step up from the 5km. These adjustments are deliberate, aiming to draw in elite runners and provide them with an opportunity to earn points for other competitions,” Nkuraija explained.
The Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon, now in its third edition, is scheduled to be held on Saturday, the 24th of August, in the picturesque town of Kasese.
