International friendly
South Africa 3-2 Uganda
Orlando Stadium, Soweto
Thursday, June 10

The Uganda Cranes threw away a lead to lose 3-2 against South Africa in an international friendly played at the Orlando Stadium on Thursday.

Ibrahim Orit and substitute Abdu Lumala netted for Abdallah Mubiru’s side while Evidence Makgopa struck a brace and Bongokuhle Hlongwane scored the other for Bafana Bafana.

Orit collected from Emmanuel Okwi to head Uganda into a 16th minute lead and they looked to be on course to registering a famous victory only to collapse in the second half.

Half-time substitute Makgopa was quickest to react to Hlongwane’s cross to bundle home from close range and equalize on 61 minutes.

With the Cranes pegged back, Hlongwane got in on the act, putting the hosts in the lead on 66 minutes as he squeezed an effort off Tadeo Lwanga which kissed off the inside of the post and into the back of the net.

The third came with nine minutes to play with Makgopa finishing off a nice team move to literally put the contest to bed.

Deep into additional time, Lumala who had replaced Allan Okello in the second half, scored Uganda’s second of the evening but it was too late to mount a comeback.

The Cranes who have now gone six games without victory, will feel they could have done better in the game and will look at Okwi’s poor shot that failed to hit the target while the game was still 1-0 in the opening half.

Uganda’s starting XI

Ismail Watenga (GK), Paul Willa, Mustafa Kizza, Paul Willa, Halid Lwaliwa, Murushid Juuko, Tadeo Lwanga, Moses Waiswa, Allan Okello, Ibrahim Orit, Emmanuel Okwi, Shafick Kagimu.
