Former South African international Zane Kirchner has taken on a new chapter in his rugby journey, joining the Uganda Rugby Cranes XVs as backs coach ahead of a crucial 2025 season, the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has confirmed.
Kirchner, a seasoned fullback who starred for the Bulls in Super Rugby and the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup, joins a technical bench led by head coach Fred Mudoola. He will work alongside assistant coaches Leonard Lubambula, Timothy Mudoola, and Marvin Odongo.
His appointment comes at the recommendation of national team consultant Nollis Marais, who has been aiding Uganda’s tactical and technical development since early this year.
The former Springbok’s immediate task will be sharpening the backs unit as the Rugby Cranes prepare for the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup—a tournament that doubles as a qualifier for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. Uganda will kick off its campaign against regional rivals Kenya.
“Bringing in someone with Zane’s experience adds tremendous value to our setup,” said Rugby Cranes Team Manager Andy Ikopit. “He has competed at the highest level and brings insight that can help our players grow. His presence boosts our technical capacity as we build towards a critical year for Ugandan rugby.”
Kirchner expressed enthusiasm about the role, saying, “I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with the Uganda Rugby Cranes. I’ve been following the growth of rugby in Uganda, and I’m excited to contribute to that journey. The talent is real, and I’m looking forward to working with the players and coaching team to help unlock the next level.”
Kirchner brings a wealth of experience to Uganda’s setup. He earned 64 Currie Cup appearances (64 points) and featured in 81 Super Rugby matches (105 points). He was part of the Bulls team that clinched the Currie Cup in 2009 and back-to-back Super Rugby titles in 2009 and 2010.
