Women’s basketball is still lagging behind in terms of fans albeit the teams displaying thrilling hoops action. The problem cuts across from regular season, to playoffs. In most cases fans watch women matches because there is a ‘big’ men’s game coming up. FUBA Commissioner for Women’s Basketball Sandra Munduru, while addressing media during the 2019 season launch on Thursday at Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC), revealed that few fans in the women league have been persistent for years and something should be done. “We shall start with institutional clubs and we will encourage them to get most of their student fans to come for the games,” she said. Universities like KIU, Makerere, YMCA, Nkumba, Ndejje, Kampala University and institutions like KCCA all have teams in the FUBA league(s) –hence a fan base can easily be established within such bodies. Munduru also said that female teams also need to get into the ground to market themselves whether by performing well or hire experts in that field in order to attract crowds because big crowds benefit both the teams and FUBA in form of gate collections. FUBA President Nasser Sserunjogi added that all is set for the national basketball league (NBL) with new things set to be introduced. “This time round, we shall have player of the match awards for every game in order to promote hard work and competitiveness. Gold medals will be given to each game’s most outstanding player but cash prizes will be given to best player and coach of the month,” Sserunjogi added. Four teams were promoted from Division One to NBL, including; Kampala University Eagles, Makerere Sparks, YMCA Lady Hamsters while six-time winners Falcons return to the table of men after a one-season spell in Division.
