In a dramatic turn of events, the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) has announced that they are letting go of Uganda Cranes head coach Johnathan McKinstry.

This comes barely 48 hours after the Federation trashed reports in various media outlets that the two were parting ways.

In a statement on Monday, April 19, FUFA announced that they had reached a mutual agreement with McKinstry to terminate his contract.

“The Head Coach of the Uganda Men’s National team, Johnathan McKinstry, has today reached an agreement with FUFA to bring an end to his 18 months at the helm of the Uganda Cranes. Read part of the statement.

“FUFA would like to thank Coach McKinstry and his staff for the work and dedication to developing the Uganda Cranes during their tenure.”

McKinstry has been in charge of the team since late 2018 when he replaced Sebastian Desabre following the AFCON finals in Egypt.

The North Irishman took charge of 18 games, winning 12, drawing three and losing as many.

He guided Uganda to victory in the CECAFA Challenge Cup 2019 where Uganda won all of the games contested, for only the second time in their history.

He was suspended for a month in March and during his time away, Abdallah Mubiru was put in temporary charge.
