Marvin Kibirige delivered a breathtaking performance at the Pearl of Africa (POA) Golf Series, etching his name into golfing history with a nail-biting playoff victory against Ronald Rugumayo.
Despite his triumphant display at the POA, Kibirige has announced that he will skip the $50,000 Rwanda Open to prioritize his preparations for the DP World Magical Kenya Open qualifiers at Vet Lab.
The final round of the series was an electrifying affair. Rugumayo, needing a three-stroke swing to force a playoff, stunned spectators with a sensational hole-in-one at the 17th. Although Kibirige faltered by missing the green and failing to save par, he held his nerve in the playoff after a tense finish on the 18th, where a bogey from Kibirige and a birdie from Rugumayo set the stage.
Speaking after his win, Kibirige emphasized the importance of the upcoming 36-hole qualifier at Vet Lab for the Magical Kenya Open. “It was a tough decision to make, but one I had to do,” Kibirige explained. “The tournament in Rwanda is a good one, but I believe that I have a chance to reach the Magical Kenya Open, and the time is too short between the Kigali tournament and the Vet Lab qualifiers.”
The professionals competing in the Pearl of Africa Golf Series shared a prize pool of UGX 20 million, while the amateur category, won by John Musiimenta, had a kitty of UGX 5 million. Reflecting on his playoff against Rugumayo, Kibirige said, “I knew that Mayo is a solid golfer, but I also knew I had the ability to stand against him after 72 holes.”
The next leg of the series will be held at the par-71 Entebbe Golf Club in April, promising yet another exciting chapter in this growing competition.
