The hockey sport is headed for greater heights after the first ever field hockey clinic was held in Kumi Municipality at the Boma Grounds. Kumi Sports Officer – Joseph Opio officially opened the clinic that had 12 schools (both primary and secondary) and over 500 students introduced to the sport.
Teachers from various schools were taken through basic hockey lessons during the clinic enabled by ACT Sports Club, Uganda Hockey Association (UHA), Hope for Sport Uganda Hockey Academy, Kumi Municipality and select Kumi schools.
“We have to keep the game alive through organizing competitions for both Primary and Secondary Schools,” ACT Sports Club founder, Alfred Odong, also a sports journalist noted.
Lawrence Kakande, the Coordinator Hope for Sport Uganda Hockey Academy, said that it was such a good feeling to witness the game being taught in an area for the first time ever.
“The kids loved the game and were quick to learn. I am looking forward to the next clinic,” revealed Kakande.
Hope for Sport Uganda Hockey Academy offered 30 hockey sticks and six balls. UHA also donated 11 sticks and two balls.
The equipment was handed over to the municipality sports officer with an aim of enabling the schools to access it for training whenever they need it.
