Despite a pleasant start, Uganda was ejected out of the ongoing COPA Africa at the semifinals after a 6-2 loss on Tuesday. Nyerere scored a hat-trick with Frank Sephania and Kassim Ibrahim netting the others for Tanzania while Patrick Duke and Abasi Kyeyune scored Uganda’s consolation goals.

Uganda coach Lutalo Hamza, whose side scored eleven goals against Namibia in their first game of this tournament, said: “The field was heavy for my players and we couldn’t execute our game plan. I can’t fault the young boys but our main aim is to groom them for future national team assignments more so for the Under-17 team.” Tanzania head coach Abel Mutweve said: “Our aim is to reach the final. They (Uganda) were a good team and we had prepared well for them. We had studied them and we had to frustrate their plans.”

The semi-finals for the COPA Coca-Cola Africa Cup will have two East African nations as Kenya takes Tanzania while South African Nations; Zambia and Zimbabwe face each other for a chance to represent their nations in the finals of the championship.

Uganda were the opening day biggest winners at the ongoing COPA Coca-Cola Africa Cup in Kenya after an 11-2 humbling of Namibia in the first game before whipping the same time 4-0 in the classification match to decide who tops the group after Ethiopia failed to show up.

Abasi Kyeyune opened the scoring in the 7th minute before Najabu Kigunzi doubled lead in the 23rd minute as Uganda raced to a 2-0 lead at half time during the second game. Kyeyune scored the third and his second of the afternoon a minute after resumption before Trevis Mutyaba netted the fourth in the 48th minute.

“We knew we had to be at our best to make it to the next stage and it was going to be harder,” explained Kyeyune.
