NEC Football Club missed a prime opportunity to claim the top spot in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League after a 0-0 draw with Police FC at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo on Tuesday night .
This Matchday Eight fixture, which began with a solemn moment of silence for the late assistant referee Peter Kabugo, who tragically passed after collapsing during SC Villa’s clash with UPDF last week, was anticipated to be a chance for NEC to bounce back after their recent 1-0 loss to newly promoted Lugazi.
Despite entering the match as one of the season’s early front-runners, NEC struggled to break down a resilient Police defense. The lackluster contest saw few clear chances as NEC failed to capitalize on possession and pull ahead of KCCA FC in the league standings.
The result leaves NEC third in the table, level on 16 points with second-placed Vipers SC and just one point shy of leaders KCCA. However, NEC has played one match more than both KCCA and Vipers.
Police, meanwhile, put up a solid defensive effort, building on their recent 2-1 victory over Mbale Heroes. The draw takes them to 11 points, placing them seventh in the league standings after eight games.
Matchday Eight action continues on Wednesday, with UPDF taking on Mbarara City at Bombo and Wakiso Giants hosting Lugazi.
