At the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics, Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai showcased her prowess by finishing first in Heat 1 of the 3000m steeplechase with an impressive time of 9:10.51 on Sunday.
The defending Olympic champion emerged as the fastest qualifier overall, leading the pack with the top time of 9:10.51 across all three rounds of the women’s steeplechase.
The Stade de France resonated with loud cheers during Heat 3 as Alice Finot of France secured her spot in Tuesday’s final, finishing as the eighth-fastest qualifier with a time of 9:14.78.
Chemutai, who holds the Ugandan records for both the 3000m steeplechase and the 5 kilometres road race, continues to shine on the international stage.
Her remarkable achievements include winning the gold medal in the women’s 3000m steeplechase at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, marking her place in history as the first Ugandan woman to clinch an Olympic medal.
Adding to her accolades, Chemutai has also earned Silver medals at the 2023 All-Africa Games in Accra and the 2018 World U20 Championships in Tampere, further cementing her status as a formidable athlete.
