Uganda breweries through their Pilsner Lager brand have handed the Kopu Pa Ubimu football tournament Shs50m financial boost. The development was confirmed Wednesday afternoon at the UBL offices in Luzira.

Kopu Pa Ubimu is an annual football tournament organized by Alur Kingdom to celebrate the coronation anniversary of the Ker Alur cultural leader (King) Ubimu Philip Olarker Rauni III.

This year’s tournament and the 17th edition will kick off on August 24 at Nebbi Primary School Grounds. Announcing the sponsorship, the UBL Value Beer Brand Manager Edgar Kihumuro revealed that it is one way of rewarding sorghum growers which Pilsner’s major raw material.

“We are supporting our farmers through football. West Nile is one of the great producers of sorghum that we use for making Pilsner Lager,” he noted. “The tournament helps the youth in particular to associate, create friendships whilst appreciate their heritage,” added Kihumuro. Alur Kingdom Premier Rt. Hon. Vincent Ochaya Orach revealed love for football in the area is the main reason why the tournament has gradually grown. “The tournament was started because of the king’s aspiration to involve the youth. The love of football by our young people is incredible. The celebrations are focused on the preservation of history, tradition, culture, and heritage as Alur people,” noted Ochaya.

16 teams from the Alur districts of Pakwach, Zombo and Nebbi will partake in this year’s tournament.
