Betway Kobs 05-38 Stanbic Black Pirates

Stanbic Black Pirates earned a deserving 38-05 victory against rivals Betway Kobs in the 2019 final at the Legends rugby grounds, Lugogo on Saturday to defend the Coronation Cup title.

It was the fifth time the two sides met at this year’s Sevens (7s) final and was Pirates second victory, while the Betway-sponsored side has prevailed over three times.

KOBS CAPTAIN JOSEPH AREDO GETS PRIZE MONEY

Raymond Emanzi crossed the white wash first whilst skipper Ivan Magomu utilized the extras before scoring his own try that was converted by Haruna Muhammad.

Desire Ayera later scored two tries with Haruna utilizing one extra to hand the title holders a 00-26 lead by half time.

Betway Kobs had a quick try that was not converted but Pirates ran in two tries and one conversion to seal a deserving 05-38 victory.

Pirates skipper Ivan Magomu said that the final against Betway Kobs was a ‘must win’ to stay in contention for the national 7s crown defense.

“The victory gives us a huge boost to win the remaining circuits,” he noted after receiving the Coronation Cup trophy from Buganda prince David Wasajja who was the Chief guest.

Pirates won Shs3m cash prize as this year’s champions while losing finalists went home with Shs2m. Betway Kobs still lead the table with 110 points but Pirates cut the gap to 3 points in second place.

The coronation Cup is hosted by Shell Rimula Rhinos in commemoration of the Kakaba (King) of Buganda coronation and is the fifth circuit of the Roke Telkom national 7s series.

His Majesty, the Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II is this year celebrating his 26th coronation celebrations. Betway Kobs, who missed some of their key players on Saturday, will now look up to the next national 7s circuit in Mbale to make amends in two-week time.
