Senegal were crowned Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 champions after edging hosts Morocco 1-0 in a tense extra-time final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, claiming their second continental title following their maiden triumph in 2021.
The highly charged final lived up to expectations, with both sides showing tactical discipline and flashes of attacking intent over 90 minutes that ended goalless. Morocco, buoyed by home support, looked dangerous throughout, while Senegal relied on their experience and defensive solidity to stay in the contest.
The game’s turning point came in extra time. In the 94th minute, Pape Gueye struck decisively to break Moroccan hearts, finishing off a swift counterattack with a precise left-footed effort to put the Lions of Teranga ahead. The goal followed a quick interception deep in Senegalese territory, catching the Atlas Lions momentarily exposed.
Earlier in the match, Senegal had survived a major scare late in regulation time when Morocco were awarded a penalty. However, Brahim Díaz failed to convert, sending his effort wide and leaving the home crowd stunned. The miss proved costly, as Senegal capitalised on their reprieve moments later in extra time.
Tensions had flared moments before the penalty was taken, with several Senegalese players initially protesting the VAR-confirmed decision and surrounding the referee. Captain Sadio Mané intervened to calm his teammates, allowing the match to continue amid a charged atmosphere.
The final was also marked by a worrying incident involving Morocco’s Neil El Aynaoui, who suffered a head injury following a mid-air collision while contesting a header. Bleeding and visibly shaken, the midfielder showed remarkable bravery by continuing after receiving medical treatment.
Senegal held firm in the closing stages of extra time, repelling Morocco’s late pressure to seal a historic victory. The triumph cements Senegal’s growing dominance in African football, adding the 2025 crown to their 2021 success.
