Ahead of this year’s World Intellectual Property Day, Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) is set to join the rest of the world in celebrations so as to create brand awareness, trademarks, copyright and industrial designs in Uganda’s sports fraternity.

The celebrations will take place on Friday, 26th April at Kabira Country Club and will include a workshop intended to create awareness on how to protect and manage copyrights, brand, slogans and logos ownership in the sports industry.

According to URSB Registrar General Bemanya Twebaze, they are going to engage all stakeholders like National Council for Sports (NCS), Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC), FUFA and other sports federations, Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA), Anti-Counterfeits Network among others.

He said that they want to help sports personalities to protect their rights under their clubs and as individuals. “URSB is to use this platform to create awareness on protection and management of intellectual property rights, management of broadcasting rights, counterfeits and piracy. We want to help sports personalities to protect their image rights for their personal use –thus protecting them from individuals who use them for their companies’ benefit,” noted Twebaze, who added that: “URSB wants to collaborate with sports sector to create awareness of brands, logos and slogans protection within the sports industry in the country.”

After the workshop, different teams from different organizations or companies will compete in a sports gala organized by URSB as part of the activities to mark the day.

Twebaze called upon among others government agencies, ministries, sports federations, sports clubs, sports broadcasters to join them in celebrations as URSB creates awareness of trademarks, copyrights protection awareness and also fight counterfeits in Uganda’s sports industry.
