Uganda women’s national cricket team, Victoria Pearls condemned neighbors Rwanda to a 7-wicket defeat during the opening matchday of the Victoria Series 2023 on Tuesday at Lugogo Cricket Oval in Kampala.
Rwanda who are the lowest ranked side in the tournament won the toss and elected to bat first but Uganda fielded precisely restricting them to just 61 runs and all out giving Uganda little to chase in their innings of the lunch time fixture.
Uganda posted 62 runs for three and won the game by seven wickets in front of the charged up home crowd that included the national women’s basketball team, the Gazelles.
2022 USPA women’s cricketer of the year Janet Mbabazi stood out for the home side posting 30 runs not out after she came in as the third batter. She had three 4s in the process and was named player of the game.
Mbabazi had partnered with Stephanie Nampiina who managed 18 runs that comprised of two 4s. The duo had also managed a wicket each when they fielded.
Gilese Ishimwe led the Rwandan side with 14 runs from 40 balls. Clarrise Umutoniwase followed with 12 runs from 28 balls.
Rwanda will seek an absolution this Wednesday when they come up against Kenya in the afternoon whilst Uganda who have no game on Wednesday will seek to maintain a winning run when they come up against highly ranked UAE on Thursday.
Meanwhile, in the first match of the opening day, UAE beat East African side Kenya by 15 runs (84/9 against 69 all out).
