Vipers, URA clash in potential title decider

URA defeated Vipers 2-1 in the reverse fixture earlier this season

Vipers SC vs URA FC
St. Mary’s Stadium

The biggest game of the 2020/21 season will take place at the St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende on Wednesday afternoon.

The two top teams in the Uganda Premier League collide for a right to climb top of the log.

Vipers who sit second on the standings host leaders URA FC with just a point separating the two sides.
URA will go out in search of a victory that will see them place one hand on the title.

Sam Simbwa’s side have not won a league crown since 2011 but they are currently odds-on favourites to win this one as they have so far proved they can sustain leading from the front.

After a run of two successive draws towards the end of April, Sam Simbwa’s side have responded in style, winning both of their past two games in convincing fashion. They have defeated Mbarara City 2-0 and taken care of Onduparaka 3-1.

However, both those victories have come at home and this will be their first trip since the 0-0 draw at Bright Stars, a stalemate that ensured the Tax Collectors see their away form move to three winless games.

Despite the poor road form of late, URA must be full of confidence having won two of their past three matches at Kitende.

They welcome back striker Cromwel Rwothomio and midfielder Julius Mutyaba who have both overcome injury.

For Vipers, they start the day second on the pile and need only to win so as to climb back to the summit.

After succumbing to their third loss of the season at the hands of Express, late last month, the Venoms have bounced back in style, winning their last two games.

They humbled MYDA FC 4-0 in Tororo before scrapping past KCCA FC this past Sunday.

Vipers recent home form is a bit worrying as they have not won in two let alone score a goal.

The loss to Express came after a disappointing 0-0 draw against Wakiso Giants and with URA visiting, it is just understandable if some of the Vipers faithful are a little concerned.

The winner of this game will be the favourite to win the title but Express who are just four point off top spot, in third, will be hoping Vipers and URA share spoils and they (Express) beat up on Kyetume to move within two points of the summit.

Vipers have no major injury issues with Dan Sserunkuma the only big-name first team absentee.

This will be the 22nd meeting between the two sides since February 2011. In the past 21 meetings, URA has won seven, Vipers six with the other eight all ending in draws. Last season, each of the two sides won their respective home games. URA defeated Vipers 2-1 in the reverse meeting earlier this season.
