Nam Blazers Beat City Oilers On NBL Debut

National Basketball League (NBL) debutants Nam Blazers opened their campaign with a bang following their 66-71 win over title holders City Oilers during the opening matchday of the 2021 season on Saturday at the Kampala International University (KIU) court in Kansanga.

The Tusker Lite sponsored league finally returned after a one year hiatus due to Covid-19 disruptions but Nam Blazers who have been very busy during the off season announced thier arrival by beating the seven straight time league winning Oilers in the final game of the day.

Oilers who looked composed from the beginning started the game on a high and led the first quarter 17-6.

However, in the remaining three quarters, it was the Namuwongo based side who ran the show dominating Oilers from the second quarter tip off till the final whistle was blown though the latter put in a good shift in the third quarter.

Nam Blazers managed 23 points in both the second and third quarters against Oilers’ 7 and 26 as they led 24-29 and 50-52 respectively.

In the fourth quarter, Oilers managed 16 points against Nam Blazers’ 19 with the debutants winning it by 66-71.

Paul Odong led Nam Blazers scoring chart shooting 22 points and 2 rebounds. Chris Omanye had 11 points, Daniel Juuko had 11 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist while Godfrey Soro had 10 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.

For Oilers, club veteran Jimmy Enabu was top scorer with 19 points. James Okello was the other player to reach double figures with 10 points while Joseph Ikong and Ceasar Kizito both had 8 points.

Women’s title holders JKL Lady Dolphins were beaten 55-58 by a now rejuvenated KCCA Leopards side.

Even though this season’s games will played on outdoor courts, no fans will allowed on game day at the venues and only the clubs (players and officials) playing at a particular time will be allowed to access the game day venue, including accredited media.
