Kairungi Salma Otika, manager of Uganda U-20 Ladies National Volleyball Team and also manager KCB Nkumba University Volleyball Club (NUVC) is one of the three candidates contesting for the position of Uganda Volleyball Federation (UVF) 2nd Vice President, a position reserved for only ladies.

UVF Elective Congress is set to take place on 31st January 2021 at UOC, Lugogo Sports Complex in Kampala and Kairungi will be racing against Hellen Nakimuli and Faridah Nalinya.

Kairungi, a wife, mother, entrepreneur, the Director KROOZ Services Limited, and Vice Chairperson of Visionary Amigos Investment Club boosts of managerial experience in and outside volleyball and hopes to channel her expertise to the game.

“In both my management roles at ESPOIR VC and NUVC, and the numerous consultations I did with other club managers, I realized that most clubs face similar challenges which I trust can only be solved by UVF. In my engagements with some of the current and previous federation leadership, I have been motivated by the encouragement they have given me to seek for a position within the federation so as to contribute to the service and growth of volleyball in Uganda. It is on this background that I hereby stand for the position of 2nd Vice President, Uganda Volleyball Federation,” Kairungi said in a missive.

Among others, Kairungi aims to; improve on the face of volleyball, sell the game to the people, get a physical address, get an accessible home ground, expand volleyball fan base through out all regions in the country, support all associations, clubs, schools, universities according to their challenges plus bridging the gap between stakeholders and the federation.

“Given the opportunity , I will bring to the executive a person in Me  that is very passionate about the overall growth of volleyball in Uganda. I count on my demonstrated integrity, good inter personal skills, ownership of getting things done, a proactive approach to solving challenges, good stake holder engagements and an inherent desire to good results especially those agreed upon to my implementation,” Kairungi noted adding that the federation also needs to have functional structures as well as contribute to the unrecognized effort of the current executive.

Kairungi also boosts of Nkumba’s success in the domestic volleyball scene including in some of the international tournaments.

“This success is attributed to the full engagement and commitment of all key stakeholders (Nkumba University, partner – Hermes, the main sponsor – KCB, the players, management, and the fans),” Kairungi said adding that the same needs to be done by the federation.

Kairungi also seeks to elevate ladies both on court and in other aspects of life.

“I want to support women initiatives. In the short time I have  been in volleyball I have  tried to support female volleyballers  in their side hustles and encouraged more to involve themselves in having additional skills  for example those who make cakes, juice, sell volleyball shoes, make soap etc.”

“I intend to encourage female volleyballers not to step aside when they stop playing but to continue advocating and partipating and contributing to  volleyball for example take up leadership in the federation, coaching, referring courses because volleyball is growing and there will be need for more man power, but that can best be achieved if we get together with former players and current female players to see how best we can have a sustainable approach to build present players, upcoming and the girl child in schools.”

According to the UVF Constitution, the 2nd Vice President has three main duties that is; (2.5.3.1) Perform the duties of the 1st Vice President in his absence, (2.5.3.2) Ex-officio member to all commissions and councils to champion participation of the gender in minority, in volleyball management and (2.5.3.3) Undertake any duties assigned by the President from time to time.
